The Julius Abure-led National Working Committee of the Labour Party has raised concerns over Governor Alex Otti’s alleged monopolization of candidate selection for the upcoming local government elections in Abia State, scheduled for November 2.
In a statement released in Abuja on Thursday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the Labour Party emphasized the need for a transparent electoral process free from interference. This warning comes just a day after a faction loyal to Otti rejected the committee established by Abure to oversee candidate nominations.
The committee, led by former LP chairman Ceekay Igara and including state secretary Andrew Ohiagba, aims to ensure a fair selection process for candidates.
Ifoh urged Governor Otti to allow the party to manage its internal affairs without outside influence, highlighting that such interference contributed to the Supreme Court’s decision to grant autonomy to local governments in the first place. He stressed that local councils should serve as engines for grassroots development and transformation.
“The Labour Party condemns the current handling of the local government elections under Governor Otti’s leadership. We must be vigilant to ensure the process remains free from manipulation,” he stated. “We call on Governor Otti to lead by example, positioning Abia State as a model of democratic principles in Nigeria.”
The party reiterated its demand for the freedom to conduct primaries without interference, advocating for a transparent process that allows grassroots members to select their candidates.
While acknowledging Otti’s leadership, the party cautioned against the potential abuse of power that has plagued local elections in various states. They reminded the governor that his rise to power was made possible by the collective support of the people, urging him to uphold the principles that facilitated his election and use the upcoming elections as a standard for others to follow.
