President Bola Tinubu, on Sunday, formally declared open the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, currently taking place in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. Represented by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima at the grand opening ceremony, Tinubu charged all participating athletes to compete honorably and uphold the principles of integrity and fair play.

The president, in his address at the event themed “Gateway 2024,” expressed optimism that the symbolic ‘Torch of Unity’ lit during the ceremony would go beyond promoting unity to igniting national pride and cohesion.

Highlighting the importance of sports to Nigeria’s global reputation, Tinubu noted that the country’s athletes have, for decades, showcased Nigeria’s strength and talent on the international stage. He praised the festival organizers, especially the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, and his deputy, for their efforts in integrating sports into the broader economic renewal agenda.

According to Tinubu, Ogun State has reaffirmed its position not just as Nigeria’s “Gateway to Knowledge,” but as a state aligned with the collective aspirations of the nation.

In his welcome address, Governor Abiodun reiterated his administration’s commitment to using sports as a tool for national unity and development. He assured the public of comprehensive security arrangements in collaboration with the NSC to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants.
