Delta State is set to shine on the global stage as five students head to Qatar on July 1 to represent Nigeria at the Nigeria-Qatar Schools Debate Championship. This landmark achievement follows their victory at the national level, where they outperformed students from all over Nigeria in the President’s Schools Debate.
As reported by Educa.ng, the debate championship in Qatar is part of a strategic education diplomacy effort between Nigeria and the Gulf nation. Dare Oritu, the National Coordinator of the debate programme, said the event is designed to enhance cross-border educational collaboration and celebrate academic excellence.
“This isn’t just a debate competition—it’s a platform for Nigeria’s brightest to engage globally. Delta students will proudly carry the nation’s banner,” Oritu said.
The victorious students representing Nigeria include:
- Wisdom Chukwuma – Government College, Ughelli
- Otorvo Uyoyou – Alegbo Secondary School, Effurun
- Abraham Honour – Okpaka Secondary School, Okpaka
- Ekhamateh Splendour – Government Model Secondary School, Asaba
- Alika Daniel – Utagba-Ogbe Grammar School, Kwale
The team will travel alongside five officials, making it a 10-person delegation.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori welcomed the students to Government House, Asaba, and promised full sponsorship for the trip. “Your success brings pride to Delta State. You are ambassadors of a homegrown education system that works,” he remarked.
The governor also assured continued support for educational advancement in the state. “This achievement reminds us of the power of investment in youth and public education. We will do more,” he said.
In appreciation, Chukwuma Wisdom, one of the student-debaters, thanked the governor and promised an outstanding performance in Qatar.
Dr. Kingsley Ashibuogwu, Commissioner for Primary Education, lauded the students’ discipline and performance, while SUBEB Chairman Samuel Mariere said the win positions Delta for global academic visibility.
