Twelve brilliant final-year students of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), have constructed and donated a 5kVA solar photovoltaic power system to their university—proving that Nigerian youth can lead in renewable energy innovation.
The project, supervised by Prof. B.A. Adaramola, was designed as part of their final-year thesis and constructed entirely using locally sourced materials. It now serves as a power backup for key engineering departments in the university, particularly the A and E wings of the College of Engineering.
“This is more than a project—it’s a legacy,” said ABUAD’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Tunde Olofintila. He also disclosed that a second, upgraded 7.5kVA project is in the pipeline to power other wings of the college.
University Founder, Aare Afe Babalola, commended the students with his trademark blessing: “You shall have greater luck than I have,” drawing cheers from the academic community.
Professor Moses Onibonoje, the Engineering Provost, emphasized that the effort reflected the robust research structure within the university, particularly in renewable energy and smart systems.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Smaranda Olarinde concluded by applauding the students’ contribution as a reflection of ABUAD’s mission to produce solution-oriented graduates capable of transforming Nigeria and the world.
