Africa’s most decorated female footballer, Asisat Oshoala, has officially called time on her international career with Nigeria’s Super Falcons, closing the curtain on a glittering era that spanned over a decade.
The 30-year-old superstar made the announcement on Facebook, revealing that the upcoming Africa Women Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024/25 will be her final tournament in Nigerian colours. In an emotional post, she reflected on her journey and expressed deep gratitude for the love and support she received.
“At 30, with six African Women’s Best Player awards, I will bow out to start a new chapter after WAFCON 2024/25,” she wrote. “Thank you for your unwavering support. I’m forever grateful for the love and sacrifices shared with me through this journey.”
Oshoala began her international journey in 2013 at just 18 years old. Her meteoric rise came the following year during the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, where she earned the Golden Boot and Golden Ball after leading Nigeria to the final. That same year, she won her first CAF Women’s Player of the Year award—an honour she would claim five more times in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2023.
Throughout her remarkable international career, she represented Nigeria in three FIFA Women’s World Cups (2015, 2019, and 2023) and multiple WAFCON tournaments. She was instrumental in Nigeria’s continental triumphs in 2014, 2016, and 2018, helping cement the Super Falcons’ legacy as the queens of African football.
Away from international duty, Oshoala thrived at the highest levels of club football. Her stint at Barcelona Femeni was historic, where she won league titles and became the first African woman to score in a UEFA Women’s Champions League final in 2019.
As she steps away from international competition, Oshoala’s name remains etched in the annals of African football history. Her retirement signals the end of a golden era—one marked by excellence, leadership, and global impact.
