In a bold move likely to reshape the political direction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hon. Nafiu Bala—former gubernatorial candidate and National Deputy Chairman—has declared himself the Interim National Chairman, citing constitutional violations and “a total collapse of party leadership.”
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Thursday, Bala lambasted former party executives for allegedly ceding control of the ADC to non-members, calling it a betrayal of internal democracy and the rule of law.
“The recent transfer of power to political outsiders is not only illegitimate but also unprecedented in Nigeria’s democratic experience,” Bala stated.
ADC Constitution Cited in Power Shift
Quoting provisions in the ADC constitution, Bala argued that his takeover was constitutional. “Our party’s succession framework is clearly defined. As the elected Deputy Chairman, I am stepping in to rescue the party from lawlessness.”
Describing the ongoing dispute as a “melodrama orchestrated by unscrupulous actors,” Bala lamented the erosion of trust within the party and the hijacking of its structure by external forces.
Legal Action Looms If Crisis Persists
Bala issued a stern warning that should the former leadership continue their “aberrant behavior,” legal action would follow. “We will not fold our arms while the party’s future is mortgaged,” he said.
He concluded by calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately recognise the transition and ensure that constitutional processes are respected.
